The two Baton Rouge teams will compete in the 2016 Marshall-Brennan National High School Championships on April 8-10 in Washington, D.C.
Wilneisha Kavaler, a junior at Scotlandville Magnet High School, and Maya Jones, a sophomore at Southern University Law Center, Southern University Law Center/Louis A. Martinet Foundation won the Marshall-Brennan Project Regional Judging Competition. The project is sponsored by the Louisiana Bar Foundation, personal injury attorneys Gordon McKernan, Judge Wilson Fields and attorney Luke Thibodeau.
The competition was organized by the College of Law of the American University of Washington. Sixty-two high school students argued before lawyers and judges about the First Amendment’s freedom of speech and expression. Cavalier earned a spot in the semifinal round and finished among the top 20 participants.

Ricketta Cotton-Monroe, an attorney with CASA Capital Area Association, was recognized as the Louisiana CASA Program Employee of the Year at the Louisiana Children.org “Geaux Blue for Children” awards ceremony on April 21, 2015 at the Capitol. Park Welcome Center.
Like four Capital Area CASA staff attorneys, Cotton-Monroe oversees volunteers who advocate for abused and neglected children in foster care. CASA serves as a voice for these children during the juvenile court and child protection process to help them find forever families.
During her 14 years at CASA, Cotton-Monroe served nearly 500 children and managed nearly 200 volunteer advocates.
“Ricketta’s commitment to promoting the best interests of abused children has been evident since 2002,” said Liz Betz, CASA’s executive director.

Joseph Ricapito, Ph.D., was inducted into the Spanish Language Academy of North America on March 1 at the National Hispanic Center in New York.
After the induction, Ricapito becomes a member of the Royal Spanish Academy of the Real Academia Española de le Lengua Española. This is the highest level a foreigner can reach.
Ricapito received a bachelor’s degree from Brooklyn College, City University, a master’s degree from the University of Iowa, and a Ph.D. from UCLA. His interests include Spanish literature of the Golden Age; Spanish picaresque novel; the picaresque novel in comparative literature; Literary relations between Spain and Italy during the Renaissance; and Renaissance studies, studies by Cervantes, Mateo Aleman.
On April 11, Air Force Lt. Col. Wade Peruit spoke to the LSU Faculty and Retirees Club about LSU’s ROTC program.

The commander noted that LSU differs from other universities because the various services are interconnected and not isolated. Common civic and campus events include parades, color guards, military balls, and sports.

Michael Acaldo, Baton Rouge St. Vincent de Paul, spoke to the Cortana Kiwanis Club on April 14 about the organization’s history of serving those in need.
The organization’s mission, he said, is to provide human contact, mass food, shelter and relief of suffering and support to promote dignity and integrity. St. Vincent de Paul offers a grocery store, food service, homeless shelter, prescription service, children’s uniforms, life skills training, money management, career counseling and parenting classes.

The historic Benevolent Lutheran Cemetery, dating back to 1870, benefited from the Geaux Big Baton Rouge citywide cleanup on April 16.
More than 100 volunteers from area organizations, Old South Baton Rouge and O’Brien House, joined the Friends of City Park and Trinity Lutheran Church in Broadmoor.
Volunteers enjoyed a jambalaya lunch prepared by Ray Derrickson. Leonard Augustus and LeBrian Patrick performed a spiritual interpretation dance. Vocalist and jazz singer Quiana Lynell, David L. Harris performed gospel and jazz music as accompaniment. O’Neill Isaac illustrated the life of Cross Green, a former slave buried in the cemetery in 1952.
Louisiana Supreme Court Suspends Baton Rouge Attorney By Consent Over No Contest Plea To Battery Charges

On January 18, 2023, the Louisiana State Supreme Court ordered the disbarment of Baton Rouge attorney Luke J. Thibodex II for disorderly conduct.
The Office of Disciplinary Counsel filed a joint motion for consent discipline after Thibodex pleaded no contest to aggravated battery and simple battery.
Also, by order dated October 6, 2020, Thibodeau was temporarily suspended from the practice of law pursuant to a joint petition for suspension filed by Thibodeau and the Office of the Disciplinary Prosecutor.
“The motion for leave to withdraw is granted and Luke J., State of Louisiana, No. 32287. This suspension will be retroactive to October 6, 2020, the date of respondent’s temporary suspension.”
